Altadena dogs are some of our favorites — they live trail-side. Fluffy Puppy Grooming is a five-minute drive south on Lake Avenue, and we've spent nine years tuning our process for foothill coats caked in Eaton Canyon clay.
Altadena is an unincorporated community in the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains, named in 1887 by Byron O. Clark — "alta" for high, joined to "dena" from neighboring Pasadena. It's home to Mount Wilson Observatory (built 1904, where Edwin Hubble made some of the 20th century's most important discoveries), the historic Cobb Estate, and Eaton Canyon Natural Area with its 40-foot waterfall. Christmas Tree Lane — the deodar cedars planted along Santa Rosa Avenue starting in 1885 and first lit in 1920 — is the longest-running large-scale outdoor Christmas lighting display in the country. The January 2025 Eaton Fire devastated thousands of homes here, and the community is in active rebuild.
Altadena is a hiker's town. The Sam Merrill Trail climbs from Lake Avenue to the ruins of Echo Mountain. The Cobb Estate trailhead drops you onto the Mount Lowe Railway grade. Eaton Canyon's five-mile loop is the most popular off-leash-after-dawn dog hike in the area. Altadena dogs come home with foothill clay in their pads, sap in their coats, and the occasional foxtail to check for. Goldens, Aussies, Border Collies, and mixed-breed mountain dogs dominate.
Our De-Shedding Treatment is the most-booked Altadena service — we tune the 20-minute conditioning soak specifically for trail dust and undercoat that foothill life packs in. We keep paw balm on every shelf for rocky-trail pads, and we've groomed dogs the day before and the day after their Mount Wilson summit hikes.
