South Pasadena was incorporated on March 2, 1888 — making it the sixth-oldest city in Los Angeles County and actually two years older than neighboring Pasadena. Its tree-lined Mission Street historic district has been used as a filming location for hundreds of movies and television shows over the past century — Hill Valley's downtown in Back to the Future, the suburban streets of Halloween (1978), and segments of La La Land (2016) among them. The Metro A Line (formerly the Gold Line) connects South Pas to downtown LA in under twenty minutes, and the city has fiercely resisted highway expansion that would have demolished its historic core.
South Pas has, anecdotally, more dogs per capita than any neighborhood in greater LA. The Thursday-evening South Pasadena Farmers Market along Mission Street is essentially a dog parade. Garfield Park, Eddie Park, the Arroyo Seco trails, and Library Park keep them exercised. Most South Pas families have one or two well-loved small-to-medium dogs — Cavaliers, Doodles, Yorkies, beagle mixes, rescue terriers.
